Otunba Mike Adenuga Bags GCON Award

Globacom Chairman and business mogul, Otunba Mike Adenuga will soon become the second businessman to bag the GCON award, the 2nd highest national honour in the country. The quiet business man leads 148 other award recipients, including serving government officials who have been listed for National awards on September 17.

Other notable recipients of the award include the Inspector General of Police, M.D. Abubakar (CFR), Esama of Benin, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion (CON), Tony Elumelu (CON) and Dr. Cosmos Maduka (CON)

The list also includes serving politicians and party chieftains.

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote received the GCON award last year.

But then,my question is this: is it right for serving politicians and party chieftains to receive national awards?

Day of Rage: Robbers Raid Lagos, Kill 3 Policemen and 7 Others

Armed robbers on Sunday attacked different locations in Lagos, killing three policemen and seven others.

The robbers began their raid on the city at about 10.35a.m from Ifako-Gbagada and drove through Oshodi to Mile 2 and Agege.

They attacked currency changers on Diya Street in Ifako-Gbagada and snatched an undisclosed amount of money from them.

The robbers, said to be six men and two women, got to the area in a Toyota Prado jeep and an Armada jeep, and also shot a man inside his car.

They also snatched recharge cards from some retailers before heading to Anthony, where they shot an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency in the legs.

They also shot more people as they headed to Oshodi and Mile Two.

The gang then drove to Agege, where they attacked currency changers and snatched two bags of money from them.

They also killed four persons and shot two currency changers who tried to resist them.

As they moved towards Ikeja, a polcie patrol pursued and caught up with them near Guinness brewery.

The police patrol opened fire on the robbers, who replied and killed three policemen inside their patrol vehicle.

A stray bullet shot by the robbers also hit a six-year old girl in the eye and her grandmother on the forehead while they were watching TV in their home at 15, Alfa-Nla, Agege.

Gunmen bomb more Telecomms Mast, Kill 16 in Yobe

Hmmmmm........ and the madness continues.

Barely 24 hours after torching 15 masts of four Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) firms in Borno state violence however, spread to neighbouring Yobe state, setting ablaze the service-base masts of Airtel, Glo and Etisalat in Potiskum and Damaturu, with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and petrol-bombs in the early hours of Thursday.

Besides the torching of GSM masts, the gunmen, suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, killed 16 people, including the Yobe state government protocol officer, Mallam Adamu, while returning from his duty post at the Government House, Damaturu.

North Violence: Telecomms Base Stations Burnt

Telecoms services were on Wednesday disrupted in Borno, Bauchi, Yobe, Gombe and Kano states following the bombing of telecoms base stations by suspected terrorists.

Our correspondent gathered that base stations belonging to MTN, Globacom, Airtel might have been affected in the multiple attacks that jolted Borno, Bauchi, Yobe and Gombe states.

Experts, who described the attacks as detrimental to telecoms growth in the country, said they were suggestive of wilful damage by unscrupulous elements.

As a result, the quality of service in the affected states has taken a downturn as interconnection of telecoms infrastructure has become severely limited.

Fires Razes Ibadan Market

Traders at Labaowo Market, Ogunpa, in Ibadan North West Local Government of Oyo State were on Wednesday thrown into confusion and sorrow when a section of the market was razed by fire.

The fire was reportedly caused by a woman who opened a can of adhesive beside another woman who was cooking. Although the police was commended for preventing hoodlums from hijacking the situation, the state fire service received knocks for arriving very late,by which time the market had been razed to the ground.

Barack Obama Grabs 2nd Term Ticket

Democrats on Thursday morning nominated United States President Barack Obama for a second term as president, setting up a showdown this fall with Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

In a raucous roll call of states that stretched into early Thursday, Ohio put Obama over top, giving him a victory that was a foregone conclusion before the first caucus in January, wistv.com reports.

Four years ago, Obama prevailed in an epic primary fight against Hillary Rodham Clinton to become the first black presidential candidate to lead his party. This time around, Obama was the only Democrat on the ballot in every state and former President Bill Clinton put Obama’s name in nomination.

Air Nigeria sacks staff, suspends operations

Now, this is really sad and annoying. Why take over a business you cannot sustain? Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim may be a 'billionaire' but he is really a terrible entrepreneur. He has practically 'killed' every business organisation he took over, and adly, Air Nigeria has been added to his unenviable list. Here's how The Vanguard reported it.

AIR Nigeria has announced the suspension of all its operations -local, regional and international – with effect from Monday, September10, 2012.

The suspension, according to the management of the frontline airline, is largely due to staff disloyalty and environmental tension, “which are not conducive for business in the aviation sector.”

In a statement yesterday, the management of the airline expressed regrets for any inconvenience the decision would cause its loyal passengers on all the routes and advised passengers to contact agents from whom they had purchased tickets for refunds.

Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the airline, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim, OFR, said it was difficult to continue further investment in the airline, with the high level of staff disloyalty and weak business environment.

FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup: Falconets Lose Semi Final Match

Nigeria's representative at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, The Falconets, will not be playing in the final. The team lost the semi final match against the U.S.A, courtesy of 2 goals from Morgan Brian and Kealia Ohai. The Nigerian team did play well and would have launched a great comeback but Desire Oparanozie's effort was ruled offside.

It was a good match and the ladies gave a good account of themselves. The Falconets still have a chance to pick up the bronze in the 3rd place match.

Kudos to the ladies. I hope the Eagles take their matches as seriously as these ladies do.

With the various accusations the 'Face Off' actor has faced in recent months, it seems like there's an element of truth in these them ooooo. Apart from accusations from 'unknown' guys, His former assistant, Joan Edwards has also claimed to be aware of the actor's sexuality.

But of all these accusations, Doug Gotterba's claim is the most credible yet. Doug was Travolta's pilot, and he claimed that they (John and Doug) had a 6-year passionate affair in the eighties!

According to the pilot, the actor even wanted to make a sex tape!

The actor was also said to have confided in the pilot that despite his marriage, he still prefers men.

Nate Dogg's family fights over his estate

So, these things happen over there as well? Na wah ooooo. Well, this is how TMZ captured the story:

Nate Dogg's kids are 100% against having their grandmother or their stepmother in charge of their late father's estate ... so says Dogg's daughter. 

As TMZ first reported, when the rapper died in 2011, he didn't leave a will to divvy up his assets ... so his wife Latoya Calvin took charge. His kids didn't agree and asked the court to nominate an attorney named Alex Borden instead -- but no cigar. 

Latoya filed new legal docs this week, requesting Nate's mother, Ruth Holmes, also be named as co-administrator of his estate ... a move that does not sit well with Nate's children.

Dogg's daughter, Aundrane Hale, tells TMZ her grandmother is only involved in the filing for the money, saying, "Ruth doesn't have my best interest or the interest of my brothers and sisters."

Aundrane says that if Latoya and grannie Ruth are the head honchos, they won't give the kids one single penny. She says Latoya "didn't even show up to Nate's funeral" and says that Ruth "was never a grandmother" and has withheld money in the past. 

A judge has yet to rule.

Green Mile actor, Michael, dies at 54

After reading the story of his cardiac arrest incident on July 13, I had a strong feeling that he wouldn't recover. Sadly, my fear has been confirmed. Michael Clark Duncan, who starred in 'The Green Mile' is dead. The 54-year-old actor passed on at a Los Angeles hospital. Omarosa, his fiancee, was with him but didn't see him die- she left the hospital room for a short while and Michael died before she returned!

New Traffic Law: okada riders sue Lagos State Government

Some commercial motorcyclists popularly called okada riders have asked a Lagos High Court in Ikeja to void a section of the new Lagos State TrafficLaw prohibiting their operations on major highways.

The plaintiff, through their counsel, Mr. Bamidele Aturu, filed the suit on Monday under the aegis of Incorporated Trustees of All Nigerians Autobike Commercial Owners and Workers Association.

Aturu, in the suit, urged the court to declare that the Lagos State Government lacks the power to regulate traffic on the said major highways because they are federal.

This is the beauty of democracy - lawyers will continue to make money no matter how ridiculous their clients may sound. Lolz.

Ex-CBN Governor passes on

Mr. Ola Vincent, a one-time Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is dead. Mr. Vincent died on Monday at St. Nicholas Hospital after a protracted illness.

He was the CBN Governor between 1977 and 1982, and was aged 87 years. May his soul rest in perfect peace.

NBC Bans Wande Coal's 'Go Low' video

The Nigerian Broadcasting has banned Wande Coal's 'Go Low' video on all local TV stations. The regulatory body gave 'nudity' as reason for the ban. However, since the ban is limited to local TV stations, satellite channels live Channel O, Trace TV, MTN Base and BET will still continue to show it.

Kennis Saint Brown of the Kennis Music label had criticised the video a few hours after it was released, and it obviously seems like her criticism is genuine.

I've not seen the video, and I'm not sure I'll see it. If you have kids at home,watching musical videos isn't the way to go.

Patience Jonathan flown abroad for food poisoning?

I saw this in The Punch newspaper but I don't want to believe it. Here's a part of the story:

There were speculation on Sunday night that the wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, might be undergoing treatment in Germany for food poisoning. An online news portal, Saharareporters, had reported that Patience had been undegoing treatment in a German hospital for about four days.

The news medium reports that Patience was airlifted to the hospital by an air ambulance last week under emergency medical conditions. It also quoted Presidency sources who said that the “emergency airlift departed for Wisbanden, Germany” but could not confirm if “her treatment was being undertaken in that city”.

Now, why would anybody go abroad for medical attention because of food poisoning? Has Nigeria fallen into such a sorry state that our hospitals cannot be trusted with an issue as simple as food poisoning? As much as I agree that this government is wasteful, I totally find this news item hard to believe. But then, if it turns out to be true, I ................... Anyway, let's wait and see.

Man conceals cocaine in roasted chicken

An auto technician, Vincent Chinweuwa was arrested by the officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement (NDLEA) for being in possession of 2.655kg of cocaine, valued at N24 million. The suspect was arrested while trying to leave the country for Brazil with roasted chicken. The cocaine was concealed in the roasted cocaine!

Seriously, where is our sense of value in this country?????
