FCMB Sack 200 Staff, Shut Down Branches

About 200 staff of the Otunba Subomi Balogun-led FCMB Bank were recently sacked on resumption of their official leave. Some branches of the bank were also shut down.

The spokes person for the Bank, Mr Kenny Aliu, confirmed and explained the reason for the development, saying that the figure represented less than eight percent of the entire work force of the bank and that the sack and the closure of some of the bank’s branches were part of an ongoing process of strategic growth of the bank.

Liverpool Demand £50 million for Torres

Liverpool will sell striker Fernando Torres before the end of January –but only if Chelsea agree a £50m package, BBC Sport has learnt. The Reds have already rejected a £35m bid from Chelsea for the 26-year-old Spaniard, who arrived at Anfield from Atletico Madrid in 2007 in a £20m deal. Liverpool also turned down a transfer request from Torres on Friday.

Another option could be a £40m deal, with a world-class replacement - namely Nicolas Anelka - returning to Anfield. Despite reports, Liverpool are not interested in bringing Chelsea’s young back-up striker Daniel Sturridge to Anfield.

The Reds are angered by the timing of Torres’ request, and believe Chelsea have ‘tapped up’ the player by encouraging him to express a desire to leave.

Torres has a £50m release clause in his contract, but this only entitles him to leave if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, so even if Chelsea offer a package of that amount, Liverpool believe they could still force him to stay.

Manager Kenny Dalglish and the club’s owners see little point in forcing him to remain at Anfield against his will, but are determined to hold out for what they see as a more realistic bid – and what would be a British record transfer fee.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City have all faced battles to keep hold of Cesc Fabregas, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez respectively in recent months.

Boko Haram, Police in Gun Battle- The Punch

Suspected members of the radical Islamic group, the Boko Haram, attacked a police checkpoint in Maiduguri on Sunday, setting off a gun battle that led to the killings of a policeman and two of their colleagues.

The Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, Mohammed Abubakar, made this known just as hoodlums killed a policeman and injured another during their attack on a students’ hostel in Jos Plateau State.

Abubakar, who also disclosed that 19 people had been arrested in connection with the assasination of a governoship candidate and six others in Maiduguri on Friday, told the Associated Press that the gun battle between the Islamic militants and the police started in the morning.

“One of our policemen was killed today (Sunday), while two members of the Boko Haram gunmen were also gunned down during an exchange of gunshots at the Pompomari Housing estate in Maiduguri,” Abubakar said.

“Our men have also killed two of the attackers whom we believe are members of the outlawed Boko Haram sect,” he added.

Stella Damasus in Fresh Romance

I didn't even know her second marriage has crashed! Na wah for this thing called love oooooo.
Stella Damasus

Mofe Duncan

This is less than a year after her short lived marriage to Emeka Nzeribe hit the rocks. Her latest care giver is identified as Mofe Duncan. He is listed as a man about town based in Abuja. He is further tagged as into the world of production (the organisation and supervision of the making of movie, broadcast or recording…), with a sister as an Anchor person in a radio station.

Stella and Duncan are said to be very careful about making noise about the relationship. Despite this, insiders claim they have attended a couple of events under the pretext of being just friends. The most popular of these occasions is identified as the celebrated wedding of Olumide Akande and Dakore Egbuson.

Both Mofe and Stella reportedly arrived and left the reception held at K.F.A Events centre, Lekki Lagos together. Whether this latest romance would lead to the Alta is not sure yet. Those close to Stella however claim the actress does not appear to be in a hurry to rush into matrimony again. Friends maintain her short lived matrimony with Nzeribe- after a brief courtship is responsible for her new stance about marriage.

Though it’s not clear what really led to break up of the marriage- insiders cite lack of proper knowledge of each other’s way as the origin.

Stella Damasus is the widow of late entertainment figure and friend of many, Jaiye Aboderin. She surprised many by remarrying four years after a couple of rumoured romances after her husband’s death.

Shockingly the marriage barely lasted months and now she is said to be back again in love with Mofe Duncan. Stella has two children, Isabella and Agelica (both from her marriage to Jaiye).

Reacting to the development via text message, the popular actress maintained 'it is a free world'.

However in the message that has a hint of anger, she wondered why it is only her romances and not other achievements that are usually celebrated.

D'Banj,Snoop Doggy Dogg and Don Jazzy

Mo’Hits head honchos D’Banj and Don Jazzy have moved out of the ‘Mo’hits Mansion’ in Maryland, Ikeja, Lagos, into a new property around Lekki Phase 1 also in Lagos.

Our sources say that the pair moved into the Lekki property late last year, leaving junior crew members Wande Coal and D’Prince behind in their Maryland residence.

Friends, partners and collaborators, Dbanj and Don Jazzy have been inseparable since they met at JJC’s Backbone music many years back.

With fortune smiling on them by the day, the music stars have solidified their relationship, looking out for one another and building one of the most successful record labels of this time.

I will definitely use my fame and connection to bring about the much needed and elusive change to my constituency. So, I’m urging and appealing to my people to come out and vote for me this April, because a vote for me will bring them all the dividends of democracy that had been consistently denied them since the beginning of this democratic dispensation”, he promised.

Owen Wilson Becomes Dad

I love this guy........

Owen Wilson not only surprised fans when he recently announced he was going to be dad, but then he one-upped himself when the baby boy was born just a few days later.

How'd he keep his impending fatherhood a secret?

"He's actually really quiet," says Carly Craig, one of Wilson's costars in the upcoming comeddy Hall Pass. "He's very reserved. He's just a normal sweet guy."

And that means he shouldn't have any problems with parenthood. "I think he's going to be a good dad," Craig said at the BAFTA/LA tea party at the Four Seasons. "Owen's normal, you know what I mean? He's not all crazy and wacky. He's not at all Hollywood. I think that makes a good parent."

Elton John and Partner Show off Zachary

Na wah oooooo.........

Pop legend Elton John and his longtime partner, David Furnish, had their holiday wish come true after the birth of their first child via surrogate on Christmas Day.

Now the couple are showing off their tiny dancer for the first time...

John and Furnish posed with son Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John for the latest Us Weekly cover, which hits newsstands on Wednesday.

"I've never felt anything like it in my life," the 63-year-old singer and first-time dad told the magazine about the moment he held Zachary in his arms. "You're so awestruck. What can you say? You take it in. The feeling, the joy, the warmth of his body, his breathing...I will never forget that experience ever."

Furnish, a film director who's been by John's side going on 17 years now (the duo tied the knot in 2005), is equally ecstatic about their boy, calling him a "content little guy...He's very peaceful...he just loves to be nurtured, cuddled and sung to."

No doubt Zachary will be watching The Lion King and doing some singing of his own in due time.

Genevieve Responds to Pregnancy Rumour

Personally, I still believe this is one rumour that can never be true. Genevieve will not get pregnant without getting married. Not again!

“I don’t want to dignify one person’s act of boredom with a response really, but the truth is that there’s nothing to respond to. The months will tell the truth. I have heard worse lies concerning me, but at least this time it’s good news even though it’s not true.” Genevieve Nnaji to Stella Dimoko Korkus on her rumoured pregnancy.

Gays Pledge Support for Atiku- The Punch

Now,this is confusing!

Barely 24 hours to the conduct of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Primary election, gays, under the umbrella of National Gay Forum, have expressed support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

The group urged Nigerians to support Atiku’s aspiration to rule the country, stressing that he possessed the acumen to turn the fortunes of the country around for the better.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday at the Agura Hotel in Abuja, spokesmen of the group, Victor Labelle and Freedom Awuke, said that in view of the meaningful contributions of the former vice president to national development, it had become imperative for PDP delegates to cast their votes for him at the party primary election on Thursday (tomorrow) as well as in the April elections.

Labelle said the gay group was exercising its fundamental human right of freedom of association as obtainable in the United States, France and other European nations where gays usually express their political affiliations.

Messi is World Footballer of the Year...... Mourinho and Tutu Win

Jose Mourinho

Aech. Desmond Tutu

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been named the FIFA Men's World Player of the Year for 2010. Messi was on a three-man shortlist with Barca team-mates Xavi and Andres Iniesta but, despite Spain's World Cup triumph, the Argentina forward came out on top in the voting.

He becomes the first winner of the FIFA Ballon d'Or, which merges France Football magazine's European Footballer of the Year prize with the FIFA World Player of the Year. The awards were based on the votes of the coaches and captains of national sides as well as global journalists.

Messi scored more than any other player in Europe's top five leagues in 2010, with 42 goals in 36 La Liga games, as well as finishing top scorer in the Champions League in 2010 with 12 goals in 12 games.

He totalled 60 goals for the year for club and country.

"To be honest, I didn't expect to win today, but it was already great to be here next to my two mates," Messi said as he accepted the award. "To win it makes it even more special.

"I want to share with all of my friends, my family, all the Barcelonistas and the Argentinians."

Xavi added: "This award is a triumph for the cantera and for the philosophy of the club. It is a moment to savour. We shall see what happens next season.

"My life wouldn't have changed with this award, and I will continue to play like I normally have. The Ballon d'Or remains in Barcelona and there is no problem with this."

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho had earlier been named FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men's Football. Mourinho won Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia with Inter Milan in the 2009-10 season and has made an impressive start to life at the Bernabeu.

In his acceptance speech, Mourinho paid tribute to Spain's Vicente Del Bosque and Barcelona's Pep Guardiola, who had been shortlisted for the award.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, he also reserved special praise for the players and staff at Inter.

"I'm the best coach in the world for 2010 because I was the coach of the best team in the world in 2010," he said. "We were a family and we continue to be a family. I continue to be part of it from afar.

"I want Inter to win every game except those against my team."

Hamit Altintop won the FIFA Puskas Award for best goal in recognition of his strike for Turkey against Kazakhstan.

Dakore to Quit Acting after Weddiing?

BARING a last minute change of heart by Dakore, the wife-to-be may have waved the movie industry bye-bye as her father-in-law, Harry Akande, has got the actress to promise the family not to act again. “As long as she’s married to my son,” R source quoted the billionaire businessman and politician.

For long, the businessman never approved of the four year relationship between his only son, Olumide Akande and the actress, afraid that a scandal could break if she continues acting, thereby tarnishing the image of the family.

“He never had anything against the lady, he was just worried she might be scandalised in the future’’, added the man who was privy to information from the Atlanta meeting in November.

The man, however, needs not fear again as the actress promised not to do anything to tarnish the image of the Akandes, just as she agreed to stop acting.

Dakore said this much in United States during the couples introduction. It was a full house and right before the many eyes, the groom-to-be asked the actress’ hands in marriage on his knees.

The fairy tale wedding will take place in Lagos next weekend. For a while now, the actress has not appeared in any movie.

Uche Okafor Dies at 43

Former Nigerian soccer star Uche Okafor has been found dead in his Dallas-area home.

Little Elm police Detective Oscar Hinojosa says Okafor's body was discovered Thursday by his wife, who left work and returned home when she was unable to reach him by phone. He was 43.

Hinojosa told The Associated Press that police are not saying it's a homicide or a suicide, "we're just saying it's a death." The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office said Okafor's body would be examined Friday.

Okafor, a defender, played on the 1994 Super Eagles team that won the African Cup of Nations. Nigeria reached the second round of the World Cup that year and again in 1998, with Okafor on the team both times.

Okafor played for the Kansas City Wizards from 1996 to 2000.

This is sooo sad, but I suspect somthing fishy must have happened. Commiting suicide is soooooooo un-Nigerian.

Sanusi is Central Bank Governor of the Year

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been conferred with award of the Central Bank Governor of the Year for 2010. The award was conferred on Sanusi, by The Banker Magazine, a publication of the Financial Times of London.

The announcement which was contained in the January 2011 edition of the global financial publication comes after an earlier one in 2010 in Washington USA, where the CBN boss was named African Central Bank Governor of the Year.

The Banker in a statement signed by its Country Representative, Mr Kunle Ogedengbe noted that “In the 18 months that he has been in office, Lamido Sanusi has salvaged a crumbling financial sector, taken on Nigeria’s powerful and corrupt bank managers and initiated reforms that have put Africa’s most promising market back on the map for investors”

It also added that the reforms initiated by Sanusi have been hailed as necessary to sanitize the banking industry, stressing that without them, Nigeria would have entered into another round of banking distress.

While commending his implementation of stricter disclosure policy in the nation’s banking sector, the magazine noted that the policy has also led to a culture of greater transparency in Nigeria’s banking industry.

Meanwhile Editor of the magazine, Mr Brian Caplen, in his response noted that “few candidate’s names can generate an overall consensus on judging panels and yet, when it came to finding the best global central bank governor of the year, Mr. Sanusi was chosen unanimously” It explained that the governor’s choice was informed by among other considerations, his whole-hearted pursuit of reforms in the Nigerian financial landscape.

Earlier in a chat with The Banker, Sanusi had stated that getting conviction for the rich and powerful Nigerians had sent strong warnings across Nigerians that the time for corruption was coming to an end. He however added that his biggest challenge at the moment was facing up to the people who had strong sway in the country, insisting that once the people were made aware of the scale of corruption in the industry, then pressing for change becomes easier.Governor had hit the limelight on August 14, 2009 with his reforms anchored on four pillars including, enhancing the quality of banks, establishing financial stability, enabling healthy financial sector evolution and ensuring that financial sector contributes to the real sector of the economy.

His reform incidentally led to the sack of five bank chief executives indicted for mismanaging the resources of their institutions. This was however bolstered with the injection of about N670billion into Afribank, Finbank, Intercontinental Bank, Oceanic Bank, Union Bank, Wema Bank and Spring Bank and appointed new board and managers in five institutions. Another key reform implemented by Sanusi was the pegging of tenure of bank chief executives to 10 years, with managing directors of UBA, Zenith Bank and Skye Bank setting the pace through a peaceful exit at the end of July 2010.

Commenting on the award, CBN spokesman, Mallam Mohammed Abdullahi said it was an indication that the reform was being recognized even by the international community. He said the recognition would further embolden the apex bank to continue doing more to strengthen the Nigerian banking industry.

Tinubu Endorses Fashola for 2nd Term- The Punch

After months of speculation from various quarters about the fate of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), in the coming 2011 elections, his predecessor in office and party leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, finally gave him the go-ahead to run for another four years in office in the 2011 poll.

Tinubu, while endorsing Fashola for a second term in office, raised the governor’s hands, saying, “By the power reposed on me by the ACN and in consultation with all party leaders, I announce the endorsement of Babatunde Fashola for re-election as governor in the forthcoming election. I have endorsed him for second term. He has done us proud, he has set standard of governance for others to emulate.”

Tinubu made the declaration at the Action Congress of Nigeria National Executive Council meeting held at the party’s secretariat in Lagos.

“He is my son. Those that were peddling the rumour are those that did not know how I knew him or what endeared him to me.
“They are the agents of destruction, political rodents, enemies and scavengers in the corridors of power that want to continue to loot state funds without working to deliver dividends of democracy.
“They said I was jealous of his achievements and said all sort of things. If you have a son that has surpassed your records you celebrate him. I am the pathfinder, he is the navigator. I am the one that identified the talent.”- Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Brad and Angelina Spend Holiday in Namibia;Donate $2 million

When Brangelina say peace on earth and goodwill to all, they really mean it. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, possibly the biggest do gooders in Hollywood, generously donated $2 million to a Namibian wildlife sanctuary after spending the holidays there with the entire family.

What did Jolie have to say about her latest holiday philanthropy?

Jolie said she chose to donate to the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary—home to orphaned, injured and threatened African animals—because she gave birth to daughter Shiloh there in 2006. The donation was made in Shiloh's name.

"We want [Shiloh] to be very involved and grow up with an understanding of her country of birth," said Jolie. "We continue to be impressed by their hard work and dedication to the people and conservation of the land and wildlife of Namibia."

The Jolie-Pitt clan spent this past Christmas at a lodge on the sanctuary, where they witnessed a doctor heal a wild dog and saw a leopard released into the wild. The kids pitched in too, helping the staff to feed baby baboons and release an animal back into the wild.

Very impressive gesture. This is why some stars never fade- genuine philantropy!
